A great future starts with a healthy body and mind! Every day, our Club kids are provided a healthy snack and fun opportunities for physical and mental fitness. Throughout the month of May, we hosted many special visitors and activities to challenge both body and mind!
Award-winning author, Marc Clark, spent the afternoon with us. He shared with the kids how he came to write “The Princess and the Parakeet” and how the book “contains the clues to help each and every one of them discover their individual powers and build on them.” Marc read an excerpt from the story and answered questions from the kids. Anna-Marie Askin-Evans of the Center for Holistic Psychotherapy gifted an autographed copy of the book to each child.
Our longtime volunteer, Judy Lamana, provided tools and created a “Blood Pressure Test” experience for the kids. They learned how to take their blood pressure, then measure it before and after physical activity and examine the differences in their blood pressure rating. The kids were shown how physical activity effects the body, how doctors would read a Blood Pressure Machine and determine healthy vitals. Another one of our volunteers, Norma Thatcher, visited our Cedar Lee Club to discuss the dangers of vaping and drugs as part of our prevention programming. We would also like to thank Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center for their support our healthy lifestyle programs.
Finally, we kicked off our Club garden by planting variety of vegetables and flowers provided by the FHS Horticulture Department. We will use the produce in our snacks and meals, as well as in our Junior Chef program. A special thanks to Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility (WARF), The Fresh Harvest and Andrea Rosse for helping make this fun activity happen again this summer!
